Molly House Spence is the new copywriter for Eerdmans. Here she recalls her memorable acquaintance with Geoffrey W. Grogan, author of the Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary volume on the Psalms, who passed away yesterday.
As one of the newest Eerdpeople — only three weeks old — I’m preoccupied with learning my new role as the copywriter. But before this, for three years my husband and I were part of a small, close-knit family in Glasgow, Scotland, called International Christian College (ICC).
So when I heard the news that Eerdmans author Geoffrey Grogan — former principal of the Bible Training Institute, the parent institution of ICC founded by D. L. Moody — passed away yesterday, my heart was suddenly several thousand miles away again with the ICC community, for whom his loss will be palpable. My mind was full of memories about this godly, humble, kind, and winsome theologian who, even at age 86, still wrote, taught, and mentored students, faculty, and staff.
His career spanned sixty years of British Christianity and evangelical scholarship, and his superb memory, authentic faith, and practical wisdom will be keenly missed.
It’s a privilege to have known Geoff, and it’s an honor to contribute to the publication of books that disseminate the thoughts of such key thinkers far and wide. To the family and friends of this author — and others — we hope it’s a comfort to know that the value of their words is recognized and preserved for generations to come, from Glasgow to Grand Rapids and beyond.
